Prior to commissioning this Cape Dory 300 MS they named Molly, Dave and Diane Symonds did something all sailors, if we are honest, dream of.  They took Quark, a 30-foot sloop and sailed the South Pacific for four years! Tahiti, Roartonga, Christmas Island, Pitcairn Island, Hawaii, the list goes on and on.  Finally they had to return to home to the Bay Area.  Looking for the perfect Bay boat, they explored the options and settled on the highly regarded Cape Dory, built in Taunton Massachusetts.  They moved to the builder’s site to oversee the construction and to add many options to the already well-commissioned MS 300.  For instance, marine toilets can be fickle.  The purchased the second most expensive toilet available (the most expensive was too big).  Instead of two coats of inside varnish, they had five coats laid down.

Dave wanted to have the option of trucking the boat to British Columbia so he had a junction box installed at the foot of the mast for easy disconnection.

How about going to the Delta?  The fresh water and hot summers have always been a draw for Bay boaters.  Who hasn’t fond memories of anchoring in your favorite slew and swimming in the fresh waters?  Guess what?  You shouldn’t be surprised that Dave has a full “Delta Cover” for her.  From the mast to the swim platform, there is a full Sumbrella cover complete with rugged Stainless steel frame parts.

I took the boat over in “turn key” shape.  Dave was letting go of his last boat and gave it all to me and I’m doing the same.  (Even his old charts of the South Pacific!).  For instance, there are three full tool kids, an electrical supply box, a fasteners box, and even a box full of stainless nuts and bolts arranged by size that is probably worth a few hundred dollars by itself.

I love this boat. But for the right price, I’d kick and scream and let her go.  So hopefully her new owner will see this and somehow the transition will be a happy time for both of us.

I have done little to the boat except install new standing rigging, jib roller reefing gear and a new mail sail.  Plus regular maintenance.  We have been down to Half Moon Bay a few times, up to the Delta and many, many long weekends at South Beach Marina next to the ballpark in San Francisco, China Camp in Marin, and dozens of weekends just off our berth in Sausalito.
